The artist book Silk-rustling (in Czech Hedvábí-šustění) is dedicated to the Czech activist Dagmar Šimková who spent 14 years in jail. She was arrested in 1952, when she was 23, for helping two friends to escape the country to avoid conscription. She was sentenced for political crimes and considered very dangerous due to her anti-communist activities. Throughout the years of imprisonment she suffered the cruelty of the penitentiary, numerous transfers between prisons and work camps, as well as continuous humiliation and inhumane interrogations. Like the rest of the imprisoned women she was subjected to continuous systematic desexualization, shaming her for her femininity and nullifying her gender. Dagmar developed an ingenious resistance strategy that she called Silk-rustling, putting into practice on herself and with her fellow prisoners. It consisted of following a careful protocol of personal dignity, maintaining daily hygiene, extolling her femininity, speaking to the authorities with kindness, courtesy, even tenderness, and establishing mutual care and support between them.
This work Silk-rustling is part of the Black Books that Roberto Aguirrezabala is making about political activists who risked their lives and even died in the fight for their ideological convictions. All the story of the book is on the outside, on the cover. The interior is made up of 500 unprinted black paper pages. It is a book that only contains a single photograph and it is on the spine, it is a portrait of Dagmar, printed with pigment inks on Japanese paper. Also on the spine is the title of her book We were there too which narrates in detail all the cruelty of life in prison. From the head of the book’s spine extend 14 black register tapes in reference to the 14 years that Dagmar spent in prison. Together, these register tapes create what is reminiscent of a woman’s long black hair.

El libro de artista Silk-rustling (en checo Hedvábí-šustění) está dedicada a la activista checa Dagmar Šimková que pasó 14 años de su vida en la cárcel por sus convicciones políticas. Fue arrestada en 1952 con 23 años, por ayudar a dos amigos a escapar del país para evitar el servicio militar obligatorio. Al ser sentenciada por delitos políticos se la consideraba muy peligrosa debido a sus actividades anticomunistas. A lo largo de los años de encarcelamiento sufrió la crueldad de la prisión, numerosos traslados entre prisiones y campos de trabajo, así como continuas humillaciones e interrogatorios inhumanos. Al igual que el resto de las mujeres encarceladas fue sometida a una continua desexualización sistemática, avergonzándola por su feminidad y anulando su género. Dagmar desarrolló una ingeniosa estrategia de resistencia que denominó Silk-rustling y que puso en práctica ella misma y con sus compañeras de prisión. Consistía en seguir un cuidado protocolo de dignificación personal, mantener una higiene diaria, ensalzar su feminidad, dirigirse a las autoridades con amabilidad, con cortesía, incluso con ternura y establecer entre ellas el cuidado y apoyo mutuo.
Esta obra Silk-rustling se encuadra dentro de los Black Books que Roberto Aguirrezabala está realizando sobre activistas políticos que arriesgaron un vida e incluso murieron en la lucha por sus convicciones ideológicas. Todo el contenido del libro está en el exterior, en la cubierta. El interior está compuesto por 500 páginas de papel negro no impresas. Se trata de un libro que solo contiene una fotografía y está en el lomo, es un retrato de Dagmar, impresa con tintas pigmentadas sobre papel japonés. También en el lomo aparece el título de su libro Nosotras también estuvimos allí y que relata con detalle toda la crueldad de la vida en la cárcel. Desde la cabeza del lomo del libro salen 14 cintas de registro negras en referencia a los 14 años que pasó Dagmar en la cárcel. Juntas, estas cintas de registro, forman lo que recuerda un cabello negro y largo de mujer.
